One Hit Wonders

So there has been a lot of shit flinging recently about who is a better quarterback – Marino or Favre?  To tell you the truth, I don’t really care.  What I do give shit about, however, is the asinine argument that Favre is obviously better because he has won a championship while Marino never did.  This kind of an argument is ridiculous for a couple of reasons.

1) Winning ONE championship is not a terribly impressive stat in a team game.  People give the quarterback way to much credit.  A quarterback’s job, contrary to popular opinion, is not to win games, its to through fucking passes, hand the ball off, and otherwise run the offense.  Football is a team sport.  Even the best quarterbacks can’t do shit if their O-line doesn’t give them adequate protection.  And not even the best offense can score enough to make up for a worthless defense (take the colts of the last 5 years or so).

2) Many mediocre and even bad quarterbacks have won a superbowl. Case and point – Trent Dilfer.  No one in their right mind would call Trent Dillfer a great quarterback because he won a superbowl.

On top of the last two reasons, quarterbacking stats show Marino to be far superior.  Marino held the ‘most touchdowns in a season’ record for a LONG time.  That record lasted longer than a season.  Superbowl titles only last one year.  Ask anyone if they’d rather be the best at something for a year or like 20 years.  The answer should be obvious.  On top of that, stats are personal.  While many argue that Favre never had great receivers, they were obviously good enough.  So that argument doesn’t carry a lot of weight with me.  Perhaps most important of all, however, is the fact that Marino knew when to quit.  Last season Favre threw something like twice as many picks as TDs.  That’s fucking ridiculous.  I don’t think Ryan Leaf was ever that bad.

In the end though, it really doesn’t matter.  Both of them were really good.  Its just sad to see Favre tarnish his accomplishments.

And for those who take offense to anything I’ve said, I don’t really care.  I’m not a football fanatic so I couldn’t be bothered to listen to your technical jargon.  I’ve got better things to do so don’t even bother to post a response.

Scott & Ramon, Stuck in 1950?

Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

The media tells me Brett Favre is good, and tries really hard. Also, he has super bowl rings. Never mind that possessing the same amount of logic as coral reef would tell you that owning a super bowl ring means diddly shit about how good of a player you are. It’s more important that Brett Favre is tough, and wins. Did you know he’s never missed a start in the entire known history of the universe? You cannot measure that kind of grittiness. Brett Favre single handedly saved the city of Green Bay from Hurricane Katrina and rescued several kittens stuck in a tree. I hear he also occasionally wins football games. And super bowls. That means he’s the bestest evah! oh my god, I love him soooooo much. I would have his babies if I could.

Brett Favre is the Cal Ripken Jr of the NFL. The more clueless among you can take that as me complimenting him.

SuperBowls Does Not a Great QB Make

Filed under: Football, media, Things that Piss Me Off — Malcolm @ 19:19

Christ, people are stupid. Seriously, do you people that spout off about how many rings a QB has won actually believe that shit? Honestly, you realize that football teams have a huge number of people on them right? That any one person’s job on the field is quite limited right? Lets say you had some hypothetical perfect QB, his hypothetical offense line sucks balls and his WRs drop everything. Is that the QBs fault? No. Is that team going to win anything? No. If you had to pick one QB in their prime for your team, who would you pick: Dan Marino or Trent Dilfer? If you said Trent Dilfer than I pray to whatever gods may exist that you never procreate.

TD Record

Filed under: Football, Sports — Malcolm @ 3:30

For all the talk about how the baseball HR record will be tainted when Bonds surpasses Aaron, I have heard zero talk about how the NFL’s TD record will be cheapened when Favre passes Marino. Now, I know there are no PED rumours swirling about Favre, but lets not forget the far more important issue: Brett Favre is inferior. Dan Marino was an awesomely great QB. Brett Favre, well, is pretty good, but seriously, who thinks Favre is better than Marino? Besides people who live in Wisconsin. And come on, they live in Wisconsin.

Thank god Peyton Manning will destroy whatever Favre ends up pushing the record to. Then at least the record will be back in the hands of greatness. Now if you’ll excuse me, Favre just threw another interception so I have to go back to my jig.
