Craziness
Carlos Lee for 6Y and $100M? Wow. Just ridiculous.
Juan Pierre for 5Y and $44M? Also dumb.
Alfonso Soriano for 8Y and $136M? Amazingly dumb.
Man, I didn’t think anything would ever top Alfonso’s terrible contract until Juan Pierre signed. Then I couldn’t believe the Angels would be so dumb as to give Matthews, a guy who’s been released three times in the past, such a ludicrous contract. And today came Carlos Lee. Wow. Just wow.
I still can’t get over Matthews though. The Angels were getting the exact same production from Chone Figgins who they already had under contract for a little over $3M. But instead, they decided to make their CF 3 years older, hand him a new 5Y commitment, and give him a $7M raise. For no reason. Gary Mathews Jr. is no better than Chone Figgins. In fact, when you factor in stolen bases, he’s almost certainly worse.
I’ve said it before, and few believed me, and I’m saying it again: Bill Stoneman is not a good GM.

Justin Morneau is the AL MVP
Big whoop.
However, buried within the ESPN.com Article is this gem:
The 14-point difference between Morneau and Jeter was the 10th closest in the AL since 1983.
So, in the last 22 MVP races, this was the TENTH closest. WOW!!! Remarkable!

YES Radio: John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman
The voices of the Yankees Radio Network, my extreme “pleasure” to take in these two as I drive home from work. It’s not just this pair, but a symptom of many broadcasters, but do they realize they are employed to broadcast, you know, the actual game? The game comes first, all your little personal stories, opinions, conjectures, etc come never if possible and second if they must, but never first.
Actual examples from the radio broadcast:
“The 2-0 to Ibanez here, low, ball three, three balls and no strikes. It’s a tough situation for Sidney here tonight with so many regulars in the Yankees lineup sitting, he has to be trying to pitch more carefully thinking he’s not going to get the kind of support he can regularly expect from the lineup, but, really Joe knows that too and I know Joe just wants Ponson to forget about the decision tonight and just focus on getting guys out. Ponson can’t do anything about the offense so he needs to just concentrate on getting the hitters out as best he can. That’s the third walk Sidney has given up. [author note: Huh? Oh, I guess Ponson threw ball four and John didn’t find that particular aspect interesting enough to note live].
a few pitches later
…the 2-0 pitch, CUT on and missed, the count now 2-1…yeah, I agree Suzyn and that’s what Joe Torre was talking about earlier when he mentioned that he would prefer Mariano didn’t throw today because he’s worked the past two days. Now the 2-2, CUT on and missed he STRUCK him out. Big strikeout there for Sir Sidney [author note: no, I didn’t skip anything, at this point, I figured Sterling had just missed a pitch again]. But that’s ok because Farnsworth didn’t pitch yesterday and Proctor only pitched to two batters so they should be fine. Now the 2-2, fouled off, the count stays 2-2 [author note: ahhh, nope, I was wrong, Sterling completely botched the count. But yeah, I can see that, little things like the current count are so troublesome to remember, they should put that stuff on TV or something so those poor broadcasters don’t have to think all the time].”
and on, and on, and on
CALL THE @#(%#*% GAME!!!!
